Hugh Maguire

(In Gaelic)
Aodh Mag Uidhir
_______________________________________

He was the finest horseman in Ireland
and commanded the cavalry in the last days of
the sixteenth century.
Tall, fun-loving and brave, he was the first
into the Nine Years War.
He summed up the situation in the north
and said that he and his must be regarded
"as hungry and rapacious wolves."

Related to O'Donnell and O'Neill,
the three Hugh's formed an unbroken alliance that
brought the whole British Army to a standstill.

The Battle of Enniskillen

Hugh Maguire was being besieged by
British troops.
Supplies were being carried to the British
by re-enforcement's when they were attacked
by O'Donnell and O'Rourke.
Food was scattered over
the area during the chaos of battle.
From that time, the locals called the area, the
Ford of the Biscuits.

The battle was the first signal that
the chieftains of Ireland had formed
a formidable alliance.
The Nine Years War had begun.
